What size should you buy for a newborn gift? Baby clothes are sized by age, but babies grow fast, so the safest gift is often a size that still fits in a few months.

This guide explains the sizes, how quickly babies grow, and which baby gifts come in each size.

What size should I buy for a newborn?

Buy 0–6 months for a baby who is newborn or only a few weeks old, because it fits now and still fits for several months. If the baby is already two or three months old, or you're visiting at the full moon or later, choose 6–12 months so the outfit isn't outgrown before it's worn.

Little Cradle gift sets list a romper size for each age band. Use the table to match the size to the baby's age when the gift arrives, not the age today.

Little Cradle size Romper size listed Choose it when
0–6 months 66 cm The baby is newborn or under about 2 months
6–12 months 73 cm The baby is 2–6 months old, or you want it to fit for longer
12–18 months 80 cm A first birthday, or a baby who is already big for their age

How fast do babies grow in the first year?

Very fast: in the World Health Organization's growth standards, the median baby boy grows from 49.9 cm at birth to 67.6 cm at six months and 75.7 cm at twelve months. The median girl grows from 49.1 cm to 65.7 cm and then 74.0 cm, so length rises by about half in the first year.

Put another way, the median baby gains around 16–18 cm in the first six months alone. That's why outfits labelled for the first months are often outgrown before they're worn much.

Age Boys, median length Girls, median length
Birth 49.9 cm 49.1 cm
3 months 61.4 cm 59.8 cm
6 months 67.6 cm 65.7 cm
12 months 75.7 cm 74.0 cm
18 months 82.3 cm 80.7 cm

The medians are averages, and healthy babies sit above and below them. If the parents have mentioned the baby is long for their age, size up.

Should I size up for a baby gift?

Usually, yes, because parents tend to receive plenty of clothes in the smallest sizes, and babies outgrow them within weeks, so a bigger size gets more wear. Size up to 6–12 months if the baby is already two to three months old, or if you'll give the gift at a full moon party or a later visit.

The exception is a gift for the hospital or the first week home. Then 0–6 months is right, because it fits straight away.

When you give it Baby's age then Size to choose
Hospital visit or first week home 0–1 week 0–6 months
Chinese full moon celebration About 1 month 0–6 months, or 6–12 months to fit longer
Visit at 2–3 months 2–3 months 6–12 months
Half-year or first birthday 6–12 months 12–18 months

Based on common practice and the WHO medians above. See our full moon gift etiquette guide for timing by community.

What comes in a Little Cradle set at each tier?

Accessories may vary slightly by design. For example, Pink Cheongsam comes with a headband instead of a beanie.
