What should you give for a newborn in Malaysia? Customs differ by community and by family.
Many Chinese families hold a full moon celebration when the baby is one month old, and guests often give money in a red packet.
Malay families may hold an aqiqah and a cukur jambul, traditionally around day seven. Many Indian families hold a naming ceremony, where gold jewellery is a common gift.
How many babies are born in Malaysia?
Malaysia recorded 396,175 live births in 2025, down 4.5% from 414,918 in 2024. The total fertility rate fell from 1.6 to 1.5.
By community it was 0.7 for Chinese families and 1.9 for Malay families, and Penang's rate was 1.1 (DOSM, Vital Statistics Malaysia 2026). Of the babies born in 2024, 65.7% were Malay, 10.8% Chinese and 4.3% Indian (DOSM, Vital Statistics Malaysia 2025).
With fewer babies born each year, each full moon, aqiqah or naming ceremony means a lot to the family. So if you're invited, it's worth putting a little thought into the gift.
What to give, by community
Every family does things a little differently, so take these as common traditions, not rules.
| Community | Occasion | What people commonly give | What to avoid | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chinese | Full moon (one month) | Money in red envelopes, or jewellery and gold; baby necessities are also common today | — | Wai Yee Hong · theAsianparent |
| Chinese | Full moon food box | The red eggs, ang ku kuih and nasi kunyit box is given by the family to guests | — | Borneo Post · Names journal |
| Malay | Aqiqah & cukur jambul (traditionally day 7, 14 or 21) | Guests attend; the family gives the hair's weight in gold or silver to charity | — | National Library Board · Kuching In & Out |
| Malay / Muslim | Any gift | Halal gifts | Food containing pork or animal fat; alcohol or perfume containing alcohol; toy dogs or pigs | Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia |
| Indian (Hindu) | Naming ceremony (often at 16 days; varies) | Gold jewellery such as rings, bangles, chains and lockets, or cash | — | The Star · National Library Board · JKKN |

What happens at a Chinese full moon celebration?
A full moon celebration marks the baby's first month. Guests traditionally bring money in red envelopes, and sometimes jewellery or gold (Wai Yee Hong).
In Malaysia, the family gives guests a box of red eggs, ang ku kuih and nasi kunyit. Red eggs symbolise new life and ang ku kuih symbolises longevity (Names journal; Borneo Post).
What guests bring
Many guests bring a red packet. Close relatives may add gold, such as a small bangle, anklet or pendant.
Friends and colleagues often pair a smaller packet with something practical: clothes in a bigger size, a towel set or a feeding set. For clothes, browse baby girl gift sets; if you're invited to a baby shower instead, the same sets work. If the family has asked for no gifts, a red packet with a card is still welcome.
What the family gives
The family usually sends guests home with the full moon box of red eggs and ang ku kuih, sometimes with nasi kunyit or curry chicken. Some families send the box to relatives and friends who couldn't come.
You don't need to give anything back for it, but a quick thank-you message is usually appreciated.
What happens at a Malay aqiqah and cukur jambul?
Many Malay families hold a cukur rambut (first haircut) ceremony, traditionally on the seventh day. Guests each cut a small lock of the baby's hair.
The hair is then weighed, and its weight in gold, or the money equivalent, is given to charity.
Aqiqah, the sacrifice of goats or sheep in thanks for the child, is usually performed at 7, 14 or 21 days (National Library Board). Gifts should be halal (Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia).
What guests bring
Guests usually come to share the meal and the doa. Many bring a small gift for the baby, such as clothes, a baby set or a hamper for the mother, or slip some money to the parents.
Something halal and practical is a safe choice.
What the family gives
The family hosts the meal, which often uses the aqiqah meat, and gives the weight of the baby's hair in gold or silver, or its value, to charity. Some families also hand out small door gifts to guests.
What happens at an Indian naming ceremony?
Many Malaysian Indian families hold a naming ceremony, often when the baby is 16 days old (JKKN), though some hold it later (The Star). Relatives commonly give cash or jewellery (National Library Board), often gold rings, bangles, chains and lockets (The Star).
What guests bring
Close relatives often bring gold for the baby: a ring, a small chain or bangles. Other guests usually give cash in an envelope, clothes or a gift set.
What the family gives
The family usually hosts a meal after the prayers and may give guests sweets or a small return gift. Ask the parents if you're unsure what to wear or bring, since practice varies between families and temples.
How much ang pow for a full moon?
There's no fixed amount. Most people give what they would give at a wedding or birthday for someone they're equally close to, and adjust for where they live and what they can afford.
The table below shows common practice, not a rule.
| Relationship | What people commonly do |
|---|---|
| Grandparents | Often the most generous; usually gold, with or without a red packet |
| Aunts, uncles and close family | A generous red packet, often with gold or a keepsake |
| Close friends | A red packet, or a smaller packet plus a gift set the parents can use |
| Colleagues and acquaintances | A modest red packet, or a gift pooled with the team |
Based on common practice in Malaysia
Many families prefer even amounts and avoid amounts with the number 4, which sounds like "death" in Cantonese and Mandarin. Use a fresh red packet, write your name on the back so the parents know who it's from, and give it to the parents rather than tucking it into the baby's clothes.

What not to give
- Clocks and sharp objects for Chinese families. Many families link a clock with death, and knives or scissors with cutting ties.
- Anything non-halal for Malay and Muslim families: no pork, alcohol or alcohol-based perfume, and no toy dogs or pigs (Ministry of Foreign Affairs Malaysia).
- Newborn-size clothes only. Babies outgrow them quickly, and parents often get plenty. Choose 6–12 months instead.
- Black or white wrapping for Chinese families, as many families link both with funerals. Red and gold are a safer choice.
Traditional vs modern gifts
| Traditional | Modern | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Red packet, gold bangle or anklet, pendant | Gift set, personalised keepsake, hamper for the mother |
| Who usually gives it | Grandparents and close relatives | Friends, colleagues, younger relatives |
| Why people choose it | Carries meaning and lasts | Useful straight away |
Based on common practice in Malaysia
Plenty of people do both: a red packet for the family, plus a small gift for the baby.

FAQs
When is a Chinese full moon celebration held?
When the baby is about one month old, after the mother's month of confinement.
What do guests give at a full moon celebration?
Usually money in a red envelope, sometimes with jewellery, gold or practical baby gifts.
What gift suits a Malay newborn's aqiqah?
A halal gift. Avoid anything containing pork or alcohol, and toy dogs or pigs.
What is given at an Indian naming ceremony?
Commonly cash or gold jewellery such as rings, bangles, chains and lockets.
How long does baby gift delivery take?
Baby gift sets travel by courier. Little Cradle sets usually ship the next working day; allow 4–6 working days in West Malaysia, including packing.
Some gifts list their own times, so check the product page and order ahead of the celebration.
Can I give a gift instead of an ang pow?
Yes. Many guests, especially friends and colleagues, give a gift instead.
A gift set, a personalised keepsake or a hamper for the mother is a common choice. If you're close to the family, a small red packet alongside the gift is a kind touch.
What should I do if I can't attend the celebration?
Send your red packet through a relative or friend who's going, or have a gift delivered to the family's home with a card. A message congratulating the parents means a lot either way.
When should I order so the gift arrives in time?
Delivery times depend on the product and where it's going, so see the product page for delivery times. Flowers are hand-delivered in the Klang Valley and, by Bamboo Green Florist, in Penang, Kulim and Sungai Petani.
Order early, as personalised items also need time to be made.
